Solution

The nutrients are absorbed and uptaken by the plants by active and passive transport from the soil. The minerals are further distributed uniformly while their uptake in the plant. However, in case of deficiency of certain elements, they are accumulated more in the older regions of the plant than the younger regions. They fail to move from the older parts due to various reasons. So, their deficiency is seen first in the younger parts of the plant. These elements or nutrients are called immobile elements as they do not have the ability to move from one place to another.

  • Actively mobilizing elements such as N, K, Mg are mobilized from older to younger parts of the plant. Hence, their deficiency symptoms appear first in old senescent leaves.
  • Relatively immobile elements such as S, Ca have their deficiency symptoms first seen in younger parts of plant.

So, normally all the nutreints and minerals are distributed uniformly by the active and passive transport from the soil.
