Question

if one mole of oxygen atom weights 16 grams, what is the mass (in grams) of one atom of oxygen?

Open in App
Solution

We are given that mass of one mole of oxygen atom is 16g. Now one mole of a substance contains 6.023 X 1023 particles. Therefore, 16g of oxygen will consist of 6.023 X 1023 atoms of oxygen. Thus

mass of 6.023 X 1023 atoms of oxygen = 16g

mass of one atom of oxygen = (16 / 6.023 X 1023)g

= 2.656 X 10-23 g
