Question

if Rutherfords atomic model is correct ,the atom should collapse ?why

Open in App
Solution

According to Rutherford’s model of an atom, the nucleus which is positively charged and where most of the mass of the atom is concentrated, is at the center of the atom and is surrounded by electrons. The electrons move around the nucleus in circular paths called orbits just as the planets move around the sun in circular orbits. A particle moving in a circular path undergoes acceleration because its direction keeps on changing. Hence electrons would also undergo acceleration. However, when a charged particle undergoes acceleration, it radiates energy. The revolving electron would lose all its energy and ultimately fall into the nucleus. When this will happen, the atom will collapse.
