Solution

Biodegradable waste: It includes wastes mainly from plant and animal sources, which can be broken down by living organisms.

Non-biodegradable waste: It includes wastes such as plastic, metal, broken glass etc., which cannot be broken down by living organisms.

Hazardous waste may include both biodegradable and non biodegradable waste and is defined as the waste that has the potential to harm the environment and public health. Hazardous waste is classified on the basis of the presence of at least one of the four characteristics given below-

1. Ignitability/flammability or the ability to catch fire easily.

2. Reactivity to various kinds of materials, which gives rise to byproducts that are hazardous themselves.

3. Corrosivity or the ability to damage material by eroding the surface chemically.

4. Toxicity or the ability to accumulate in a biological system and harm it's functions.

Non hazardous waste is the waste that is considered less harmful to the environment or human health.
