Question

if the components of work done are vector quantities ,then why is work done a scalar quantity

Open in App
Solution

Work is defined as a scalar because it depends on the net distance involved, regardless of the direction. If the object winds up where it started, no work is performed because the distance is zero.

Displacement and force are both vector quantities because they have both magnitude and direction.

Also, work is the scalar product of force and displacement.
