If the earth acts as a magnet, the magnetic attraction should increase as we go deeper into the earth. But quite the opposite happens. Why?
And if the north pole and the south pole point toward the geographic north and south,a needle freely hanged on the north pole should point downward, right?
The earth's magnetic field has two components; vertical component and horizontal component. Now, as we move away of towards the center of the Earth (the core) both components change, so earth's magnetic field varies with depth. Now, as a consequence of the inverse cube law (F ~ 1/r3, where F is the force and r is the distance) the overall intensity of the Earth's magnetic field does increase with depth.
A freely suspended magnetic needle would always align itself in the north-south direction with one end pointing towards the north while other one would point towards the south (magnetic pole).
