Question

If the endosperm of a maize plant has 30 chromosomes, then, what will be the number of chromosomes in antipodals, perisperm, endothecium and sperms.

Solution

Endosperm ( nutritive tissue of seed) in angiosperms is triploid ( three sets of chromosomes). It is formed after fertilisation of polar nuclei with male gamete. If the number of chromosomes present in the endosperm (3n) of maize is 30, then the diploid cell (2n)and haploid cell (n) would have 20 and 10 chromosomes respectively.
,
Antipodal cells are haploid cells present in embryo sac . So, in the given case they would have 10 chromosomes.
Perisperm is the remnant of nucellar tissue which are diploid. So, in the given case they would have 20 chromosomes.
Endothecium is the cell layer of anther, which is diploid. So, in the given case they would have 20 chromosomes.
Spern is the male gamets and gamets are always haploid. So, in the given case they would have 10 chromosomes.
