If the mucous kills all the bacteria in the food then why do sometimes we fell ill due to food containing baceria?

Mucus kills the bacteria, fungi and other pathogen that enters our body in food. But sometimes certain microorganisms enters our body through skin (if some cut or injury is their), which are not in direct contact with mucus. So the entered pathogen causes a person to fall ill.
