Question

If we used bar magnet instead of soft iron in making an electromagnet will it affect? Meaning on passing current will the magnetic strength of increase?

Solution

If a bar magnet is used instead of soft iron in making an electromagnet then it will not behave like an electromagnet because there will be magnetic field even after the current is switched off.

If the current through the coil is such that the produced magnetic field is along the magnetic field of the bar magnet then the net magnetic strength of the arrangement will increase.

If the current through the coil is such that the produced magnetic field is opposite to the magnetic field of the bar magnet then the net magnetic strength of the arrangement will decrease.
