Question

Illustrate Mendels experiment to show that traits may be dominant or reccesive by taking tall/short plant as a character in a garden pea plant.

Open in App
Solution

Mendel crossed a true breeding tall plant (TT) and true breeding short plant (tt). This cross ( F1 generation) yielded only tall plants having a genotype of Tt and TT. He then self crossed the plants of F1 generation resulting in F2 generation. For the second generation

Parents:

True breeding tall plant - TT

True breeding small plant - tt

F1 generation - Tt

F1 generation on self crossing will result in F2 generation.

The punnett square of the second generation is as follows:

T

t

T

TT

Tt

t

Tt

tt

Phenotypic ratio obtained was 3:1::tall:short

Using this Mendel concluded that the plants with the phenotype TT and Tt are tall plants while the plants with phenotype tt are short plants which mean that only a T is enough for the plant to be tall while the absence of T allele resulted in short plant. Thus, allele T is dominant while allele t is a recessive as the dominant allele is the one which expresses itself in heterozygous condition.
