In a hydraulic press used for compressing cotton,the area of the piston is 0.1m2 and the force exerted along the piston rod is 200N.If the area of the larger cylinder is 0.8m2 find the pressure produced in the cylinder and the toal crushing force exerted on the bale of cotton.

Hi,
The area of the piston, A1 = 0.1 m2
Force along this piston, F1 = 200 N
The area of the larger piston, A2 = 0.8 m2
Force along the larger piston, F2 =?
By Pascal’s law,
(F1)/(A1) = (F2)/(A2)
=> F2 = (F1)( A2)/ (A1)
=> F2 = (200 × 0.8) / (0.1)
=> F2 = 1600 N
