Question

in an ecosystem plants are found less in number. explain the ecological problems in terms of bio-geo chemical cycles.

Solution

If in an ecosystem there are less plants then proper cycling of nutrients will not take place and the nutrients will be flooded in the soil and it will affect the biogeochemical cycle.

Nitrogen Cycle- If there will be less plants then atmospheric nitrogen will not be fixed. Herbivores which feed on plants will also reduce in number and as a result it will effect the entire food chain and flow of nitrogen in the ecosystem.

Carbon Cycle- If there will be less plants then carbon dioxide will accumulate in the atmosphere and will cause global warming. Since less plants will be there then there will be less chance of formation of fossil fuels. Hence the carbon dioxide will keep on accumulating and no cycling in the ecosystem will take place.

Phosphorus Cycle- Phosphorus will also keep on accumulating in soil and will not be recycled in the ecosystem.
