In an electric motor when a strong magnet's north pole is kept straight facing the south pole of the opposite magnet ,will they not attract each other ? Unlike poles attract each other no ?

Yes, the north pole and south pole facing each other in a motor do attract each other. They are placed in such a way to obtain a uniform magnetic field in between the poles.
