Solution

In human beings, there exists 23 pairs of chromosomes, out of which 22 pairs are same in males and female, while 1 pair of chromosome, also known as sex chromosome is different in both. Males have XY chromosome while females have XX chromosome. The children irrespective of whether its a boy or girl will receive a X chromosome from their mother, while they can receive either X or Y chromosome from their father. If they receive X chromosome from their father, they carry XX chromosome, which means the child would be a girl, while if they receive Y chromosome from their father, the child would be a boy carrying XY chromosome. Their is 50% chance for the child to acquire X or Y chromosome from their father.

Father - XY

Mother - XX

So, the punnet square will be as follows

XX
XXXXX
YXYXY

Therefore, ratio of boy : girl is 1:1
