Question

In India, it is after said that we are unable to provide health services for all because the government does not have enough money and facilities. After reading the above left hand column (Pg. 20 in 'Role of the Government in Health') do you think this is true? Discuss.

Solution

The information presented in the left side of the column demonstrates the achievements of the country in the health care sector. However, it also needs to be seen in the light of the information on the right side of the column that highlights the deficiencies. Most of the achievements are in the private sector. The public sector, to which the poor people turn for their health care needs, is still not properly developed and has to bear the major stress of patients. Insufficiency of funds and facilities is a factor as providing cheap health care to poorer sections of society requires massive government funding as the people from economically weaker sections cannot afford the cost of treatment themselves.
