In photosynthesis,what is reduced and what is oxidised?

Open in App
Solution

Photosynthesis is the process by which green plants make their own food using carbon-dioxide, water and chlorophyll in presence of sunlight.
Reduction means addition of hydrogen or electrons while the oxidation means loss of hydrogen or electrons.
In photosynthesis carbon-dioxide is reduced to carbohydrates and water is oxidised to oxygen.
The reduction of carbon-dioxide occurs in the following way-
CO2 + 24H++ 24e- → C6H12O6 + 6H2O
The oxidation of water occurs in the following ways-
12H2O → 6O2 + 24H+ + 24e-
