Question

in retroviruses the flow is in opposite direction i.e

RNA----> DNA----->RNA------> PROTIENS.

then why is rna converted into dna if the protien is synthesised from RNA?

Solution

Retroviruses have RNA as there genetic material and along with that they have an enzyme reverse transcriptase. Reverse transcriptase synthesizes DNA using RNA as the template.

During infection when the virus enters the cell, double stranded DNA is synthesized from RNA. This synthesized DNA integrates into the host genome and starts producing mRNA which codes for the viral proteins and genetic material (RNA) for new virus particles.

Therefore, RNA is converted into DNA so that it gets integrated into the host genome and synthesize multiple copies of RNA from DNA. RNA cannot be synthesized from RNA. So, this is necessary to form new virus particles.
