Question

In the chemical equation for electrolysis of water why is sulphuric acid not mentioned?

Open in App
Solution

The electrolysis of water, as the name suggests is brought about by electricity. Hence, it is more important to mention electricity in the chemical equation for the reaction than sulphuric acid. Sulphuric acid basically acts as a catalyst. It increases the conductivity of water and thereby speeds up the process of electrolysis. However it does not affect the chemical composition of the reactant or products.
