In the reaction of dilute hydrochloric acid and iron fillings, can't we take the valency of iron as 2?

Solution
When iron reacts with dil.HCl, hydrogen gas is liberated. This prevents the oxidation of ferrous chloride to ferric chloride. The valency of Fe as ferrous is 2. That is why we write valency 2 for iron in product not 3. Fe + 2HCl → FeCl2 + H2
