The reduction of aldehydes to the corresponding alcohols by addition of hydrogen in the presence of catalysts is called catalytic reduction or catalytic hydrogenation.The catalysts used are finely divided metal such as platinum, palladium or nickel; NaBH₄ or LiBH₄.
Butanal is reduced to butanol as follows:
