The reduction of aldehydes to the corresponding alcohols by addition of hydrogen in the presence of catalysts is called catalytic reduction or catalytic hydrogenation.The catalysts used are finely divided metal such as platinum, palladium or nickel; NaBH4 or LiBH4.
Butanal is reduced to butanol as follows:

CH3CH2CH2CHO + H2 Pd CH3CH2CH2CH2OH Butanal Butanol
