Question

in Young"s double slit experiment the slits are 0.5mm apart & interferance is observed at adistance of 100cm from the slits.It is found that the 9 th bright fringe is at a distance 8.835mm from a second dark fringe from the center of the fringe patern,then what is the wavelength of light used?

Solution

d = 0.5×10-3m

D = 1 m

Distance of a 9th bright fringe is given by

yn = 9λD/d

Distance of a 2nd dark fringe is given by

ys = (2×1+1)λD/2d = 3 λD/2d

Given

yn – ys = 8.835×10-3m

=> (9 -3 /2) λD/d = 8.835×10-3

=>7.5×λ×1/0.5×10-3 = 8.835×10-3

=> λ=0.589×10-6 m

=> λ=5890×10-10 m = 5890 Angstrom
