  1. India is second in world in sugar production but first in production of gur and khandsari.

    i) Brazil was the highest producer of sugarcane in 2009 with an output of 672,157,000 tonnes while India had a production of 285,009,000 tonnes.

    ii) A high percentage of sugarcane that is grown in India is utilised for the production of gur and khandsari.

    iii) Gur and khandsari has a high demand in the rural areas of India as gur is used instead of sugar as a sweetener in rural India.

    iv) The price of khandsari is lower than the price of sugar as working capital required for its production is lower.
