Question

InRutherford’s experiment, generally the thin foil of heavyatoms, like gold, platinum etc. have been used to be bombarded by theα-particles. If the thinfoil of light atoms like aluminium etc. is used, what differencewould be observed from the above results?

Solution

A thinfoil of lighter atoms will not give the same results as given withthe foil of heavier atoms.

Lighteratoms would be able to carry very little positive charge. Hence, theywill not cause enough deflection of α-particles(positively charged).
