Question

Iron(iii)chloride is acidic while sodium carbonate is basic. Explain.

Open in App
Solution

The salts of strong acid and weak base give acidic solutions and the salts of strong base and weak acid give alkaline solutions.
Iron(III) chloride is acidic because it is formed by the reaction of a weak base Fe(OH)3 and a strong acid HCl. Thus FeCl3 is acidic in nature.

3 HCl + Fe(OH)3 FeCl3+ 3 H2O
hydrochloric Iron Iron water
acid hydroxide Chloride

Sodium carbonate (Na2CO3) solution is made up by the reaction of a strong base NaOH and weak acid carbonic acid(H2CO3) thus aqueous solution of Sodium carbonate is alkaline .
H2CO3 + 2NaOH Na2CO3+ 2 H2O
carbonic sodium sodium water
acid hydroxide carbonate
