Solution

The electric field is a vector quantity, whose direction is described by the effect of a charge or set of charges on the region surrounding it. The electric field direction due to a positive charge is always directed away from the positive source and electric field direction due to a negative charge is always directed toward the negative source. Thus, if you use a negative source charge, then the electric field will be negative due to negative charge.
