Question

Is Graphite purest form of carbon?

Open in App
Solution

Hi, we cannot say graphite as the purest form of carbon now. According to latest discoveries purest form of carbon is Fullerene. Fullerenes do not have surface bonds that are to be attracted by other atoms as we see in the case of diamond and graphite.

The fullerenes, discovered in 1985 by researchers at Rice University, are a family of carbon allotropes named after Buckminster Fuller.

Fullerenes are pure carbon’s that are in the shape of spherical hollow cage like a soccer ball with 60 carbon atoms. It is the only pure form of molecular carbon utilized by our body.
