Respiration is an oxidation reaction. Aerobic respiration breaks down glucose. During aerobic respiration, oxygen gets reduced by donating an electron to hydrogen forming water. In this process glucose gets oxidised to produce carbon dioxide, water and energy.

C6H12O6 + 6O2 → 6CO2 + 6H2O + Energy
