Question

Is there any specific reason why the latent heat of vaporization of water is more than the latent heat of fusion?

Open in App
Solution

According to the kinetic theory of matter, the molecules or atoms of a substance have lowest energy in the solid state, the energy is comparatively more in the liquid state and is highest in the gaseous state.
Latent heat of fusion is necessary to convert a solid to liquid while latent hat of vaporization is necessary to convert a liquid to gaseous state. Since, gaseous state is the high energy state, latent heat of vaporization is more than latent heat of fusion.
