Question

It is said that hydrogen shows properties similar to that of halogens as well alkali metals, then why it can't be consider as a metalloid?

Solution

Hydrogen has only one electron due to which it shows properties similar to alkali metals with only one valence electron and halogens which are short of only one electron. Hydrogen can loose the only electron like alkali metals or gain an electron like halogens. But metalloids have no resemblance with the electronic configuration of metals or non-metals. Their properties are in between those of metals and non-metals. Hence, hydrogen is not a metalloid but an element with some properties similar to alkali metals and some properties similar to halogens.
