it is said that metals react with acids to produce hydrogen gas. then how can hydrogen gas be produced when a metal reacts with sodium hydroxide(base)??

Metals displace the hydrogen in acids to liberate hydrogen gas.But metals don't react with bases.Only a few metals such as zinc, aluminium etc with NaOH in aqueous medium to form a salt and hydrogen gas.
