The two statements are not same although both define the process of photosynthesis. Actually photosynthesis has two phases: light reaction and dark reaction. In light reaction plants capture sunlight energy and convert this energy into chemical form of ATP and NADPH. In dark reaction, ATP and NADPH formed in light reaction are used to form carbohydrates (food) from carbon dioxide and water.
