Question

Liquids generally have lower density compared to solids. Then why does ice float on water

Open in App
Solution

The density of water decreases below 4 degree Celsius and ice is formed at 0 degree Celsius from water and therefore ice has less density than liquid water and hence floats on water. Water is the only substance whose solid form is less dense than its liquid form. This feature of water has biological implications as ice insulates the water below it and makes life possible in water in extreme cold conditions.
