Shivaliks: Land erosion by water that has led to serious land degradation in foothills of Shivaliks. Gully erosion is highly prevalent here. Northeastern parts of India: Slash and burn or Jhum cultivation is the major reason for soil erosion in northeastern parts of India. Burning patches of land for cultivation renders such areas without trees. As such, the soil cover becomes loose. Herein, the patches of land are used for cultivation until they lose their fertility. Such loose and infertile land areas are prone to soil erosion by wind and water. Arid regions: Wind is the major reason for soil erosion in such areas. Arid areas have little or no vegetation. As a result, the soil cover is loose and is blown away by wind.
