Liberal nationalism is a kind of nationalism that emphasizes not just national identity and independence, but also tolerance and repect for the freedom of other nations. It does not seek to discriminate against people of other nationalities.
It is in contrast to ethnic nationalism where only members of a certain ethnic or religious group are considered as members of the nation. Instead, under liberal nationalism, membership of the nation is voluntary. Anybody can be a part of the nation so long as he or she repects the basic value of liberalism, tolerance and freedom. Liberal nationalism is based on a democratic political system in which citizens participate actively.
