Some of the major reasons behind water scarcity are:

• Increase in population needs increased food production which in turn need more water for irrigation.
• Climatic change and variability- Depleting of natural resources due to changing climate conditions (Deforestation etc.) leads to decrease in rainfall which leads to water scarcity.
• Poor management of water resources.​
• Over exploitation of the ground water more than it is recharged.
• Increase in water pollution decreases the availability of fresh water.
