Open in App
Solution

Meaning: The movement of persons from one place or region to another place (generally from a less developed region to a more developed region).

Causes: The causes of migration can be divided in two broad categories as "pull factors" and "push factors". The pull factors comprises of such factors that lead to an improvement in the overall economic and social well-being of the individuals (such as better employment opportunities, better health care facilities). On the other hand, push factors push factors comprises of negative factors that push the people away to other reasons (such as a natural disaster).

Consequences: Migration is seen to have both positive as well as negative consequences. The individuals migrating to the more developed regions experience better overall standard of living and social well-being. They also add to the economic growth and development of the region. The individuals in the native region also benefit on account of remittances from the emigrants. However, the native region faces negative consequences on account of "brain drain". Another negative consequence of migration is the additional social burden on the region towards which the migration takes place.
