Center of mass and center of gravity used interchangeably but they are not physically same.

They coincide in a uniform gravitational field but when the gravity is not uniform i.e. it changes then they do not coincide.

Center of gravity is a geometric center of body where gravitational force act or location of the weight of the body.

Center of mass is the mean location of all the masses in the system. So,

• When a body has a uniform mass density like a solid sphere, cylinder or a cube, then its COM will coincide with the COG, but
• When the body has so large dimensions that the value of acceleration due to gravity is different for different parts of the body like balance toy bird or large complicated engineering machines for that matter, COM shall not be coincide with its COG
