Question

Name substance oxidised ,reduced, oxidising agent reducing agent in the following reactions:

(i) Fe + S -- FeS

(ii) Ca + Cl2 -- CaCl2

Open in App
Solution

Oxidation state of Fe in reactant is 0 while in product it is +2
Oxidation state of S in reactant side is 0 while in product side it is -2.
So, Fe is getting oxidised and hence acting as reducing agent.
S is getting reduced and hence acting as an oxidising agentThe substance which loose electrons get oxidised.
The substance which gain electrons get reduced.
The oxidising agent itself reduce. While the reducing agent itself get oxidised.
1) Fe + S FeS
Oxidation state of Fe in reactant is 0 while in product it is +2
Oxidation state of S in reactant side is 0 while in product side it is -2.
So, Fe is getting oxidised and hence acting as reducing agent.
S is getting reduced and hence acting as an oxidising agent.
2) Ca + Cl2 CaCl2
Oxidation state of Ca in reactant side is 0 while in product it is +2
Oxidation state of Cl in reactant side is 0 while in product side it is -1.
So, Ca is getting oxidised and hence acting as reducing agent.
Cl is getting reduced and hence acting as an oxidising agent
