Name the instrument used to recieve sound waves under water?

Sound is the vibration of matter therefore it exists under water, in rocks etc. Lot of devices were used for both to detect submerged submarines and also to allow those same submarines to locate their targets by the waves of the sound. Earlier the device that was used is hydrophone but now in new technology, the instrument used is SONAR.
