The Chipko movement was originally started in 18th century by the people of Bishnoi community of Rajasthan. A large group of 84 people laid down their lives to protect the trees which were ordered to cut in the Bishnoi Villages. After this incident, the king of Jodhpur passed an order of not cutting any trees in Bishnoi community. This movement again gained the momentum in the Himalayas in 1973 which became a success and further led to protests in other regions as well to protect the forests.
