Solution

  • The energy is supplied in the form of electrical charges for the chemical reaction.
  • The purpose of the experiment was to prove the origin of life.

More to Know:

Miller and Urey ‘s experiment is considered to be the classic experiment on the origin of life. The experiment used water (H2O), methane (CH4), ammonia (NH3) and hydrogen (H2) materials which were believed to represent the major components of the early Earth's atmosphere

Miller and Urey created conditions similar to the primitive atmosphere in the laboratory using glass apparatus and tubes. They created electric discharge using electrodes in a closed flask containing methane, ammonia, hydrogen and water vapour at 800 degree C. The water containing chamber was heated to provide water vapour. After a week, they observed the formation of a number of complex organic molecules like sugars, lipids, amino acids and nitrogen bases. Analysis of meteorites also revealed the presence of similar compounds, indicating the occurrence of similar processes elsewhere in the space. The chemical evolution of life was more or less accepted.
