Metals react with water to form metal oxide and hydrogen gas.
Metals like aluminium , zinc and iron do not react with either cold water or hot water. They react with steam to form a metal oxide and hydrogen.

2 Al(s) + 3H₂O $\to$ Al₂O₃(s) + 3 H₂(g)

Zn (s) + H₂O(g) $\to$ ZnO (s) + H₂(g)

3 Fe (s) + 4 H₂O(g) $\to$ FeO (s)+ Fe₂O₃(s) + 4 H₂(g)
