Question

no.of orbitals in Cr+ion?

no.of subshell in cr+ion?

what type of magnetic character it has?

Solution

There atomic number of Chromium is 24. Its electronic configuration is [Ar] 4s13d5. Hence in the formation of Cr+ ion, the single electron from the 4s orbital would be lost. Therefore the electronic configuration of Cr+ ion would be [Ar] 3d5.

The number of subshells in the Cr+ ion would be 10 (1s, 2s, 2p, 3s, 3p, 3d, 4s, 4p, 4d and 4f) and has 30 orbitals. However the number of orbitals occupied by electrons would be 14. As there are 5 unpaired electron in Cr+ ion, it would be paramagnetic.
