If we make a small landfill with biodegradable and non biodegradable materials we can easily distinguish between the two. Biodegradable material like paper, vegetable and fruit peels, meat. Bones etc will decompose very quickly as compared to non biodegradable materials like plastics or chemicals which either d not decompose or decompose very slowly.
