Question

on electrolysis 225g of water gave 25g of hydrogen and 200g of oxygen . In another experiment when 10 g of hydrogen gas was burnt with 80g of oxygen 90g of water was formed . show by calculation the validity of the law of constant composition

Solution

Solution of this question is as follow:

First experiment:

Amount of water taken = 225 g

Hydrogen formed = 25g

Hence percentage of hydrogen in water = (25/225)*100 = 11.1%

Second experiment:

Amount of hydrogen burnt = 10 g

Amount of water produced = 90g

Hence percentage of hydrogen in water = (10/90)*100 = 11.1%

From both experiments, we found that percentage of hydrogen in water is same. So law of constant composition is valid.
