Question

On what reason of misgovernment was Awadh annexed by Lord Wellesley?

Open in App
Solution

Awadh was annexed by Lord Dalhousie in 1856 on the ground that the Nawab of Awadh, Wajid Ali Shah, was incompetent and unfit to rule. The British alleged that the Nawab spent all his time on frivolous activities like singing and dancing. As a result, the quality of governance was unsatisfactory and the people of Awadh were suffering.
