Question

If an element ‘X’ is placed in group 14 what will be the formula and nature of bonding of chloride?

What is eutrophication? Mention its harmful effect.

Solution

X is placed in the 14th group.

Elements of the 14th group are C,Si, Ge, Sn and Pb.

The nature of the boding is covalent because they have 4 electrons in the outermost shell so sharing of electrons takes place.

Compound of C, Si and Ge with the chlorine is CCl4, SiCl4 and GeCl4 respectively

Down the group +2 oxidation state becomes more stable due to the inert pair effect

so, Sn and Pb will form SnCl2 and PbCl2.

Eutrophication is the presence of excess nutrients in water bodies. Release of nutrient rich sewage and industrial effluents lead to introduction of nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus in the water body.

This leads to the increase in temperature and Biological Oxygen Demand of the water body, causing increased biological activity, thereby leading to algal blooms.

The following are the harmful effects of eutrophication:-

  • Species diversity decreases and the dominant biota changes

  • Plant and animal biomass increase

  • Turbidity increases

  • Rate of sedimentation increases, shortening the lifespan of the lake

  • Anoxic conditions may develop .
