Question

P + HNO3 → H3PO4 + NO2 + H2O solve by ion electron method

Open in App
Solution

P + HNO3 → H3PO4 + NO2 + H2O

Oxidation half reaction - P → H3PO4

Reduction half reaction - HNO3 → NO2

Balance oxidation half reaction:

P + 4 H2O → H3PO4 + 5H+

Balance the charge in the above reaction:

P + 4 H2O → H3PO4 + 5H++ 5e- ---------------(1)

Balance reduction half reaction:

HNO3 + H+ → NO2 + H2O

Balance the charge:

HNO3 + H+ + e- → NO2 + H2O

Multiply reduction half reaction with 5 to make the number of electrons in oxidation and reduction reaction equal.

5 HNO3 + 5H+ + 5e- → 5 NO2 + 5 H2O -----(2)

Add (1) and (2) and cancel same substances.

P + 5 HNO3 → H3PO4 + 5 NO2 + H2O

This is the balanced equation.
