a. The conservatives Hindus and Muslims were not open to the idea of literacy among girls as most of them feared that women would become unruly and turn rebellious as they would start questioning their given conventional roles in the society.

.b. Hindu conservatives felt that with literacy women would be widowed and that it would break the traditional family hierarchies.

c. Muslim orthodox elements felt that women would be corrupted by reading Urdu romances and would get swayed away by the ideas.
