Initially, the French Revolution did not aim to abolish the monarchy. Instead, they wanted to establish a constitutional monarchy in which the National Assembly would yield supreme power. However, large sections of the population believed this would not be enough. They feared that if the king was allowed to remain on the throne, then the ruling classes including the aristocracy and the clergy would strike back and take over power once again. Hence, these sections of the population wanted to carry the Revolution further abolishing the monarchy and eliminating the aristocracy.
